What’s special about our Noga Quartet is that we’ve all grown together from the beginning when we were aged 20 and didn’t understand what string quartet playing was about. I’ve grown up with this string quartet and feel that for me it’s very special. We don’t play a wide repertoire because we get involved at a very detailed level in each piece. We play very freely and have very fine moments in every piece of music we play. We couldn’t do this if we didn’t spend the time we do developing our specific interpretation.
For me playing in a string quartet is the most beautiful thing one can do with a viola. It has a beautiful voice in the quartet—it often gets the composers special attention. There’s always a point in a quartet when the viola line makes you fall in love. I wanted to be part of a string quartet ever since I learnt viola as a child. My father is a violinist, and I started learning with his violin teacher when I was 5. I moved to a ¾ viola when I was 10 and at 13 I got my first full-sized viola for my Bar Mitzvah. It was in that time I decided I would become a violist!. I went to the Conservatory in Israel in Givataim and Tel Aviv, and at 15 moved to Italy and started studying in the Conservatory in Milan. It was there where my passion for string quartet started.I first visited Berlin aged 18, and entered into the University of the Arts in Berlin a few years later at 21. It was here that I met Joan and Lauriane and became a founding member of the Noga Quartet.
